The car stalled twice as we meandered up the boreen towards the ancient stone fort of Grianan of Aileach, and no wonder, for when we reached her it was as if we had reached the sky. Sitting above the sloping hills of Inishowen, she commands spectacular views of Lough Swilly and Lough Foyle. A towering sphere above the plains, she stands like a doorway to the very heavens.

Woodville Walled Garden, County Galway

Hiding in the countryside between Galway and Loughrea, Woodville Walled Garden is simply enchanting. Painstakingly restored to the original old plans, it is a stunning springtime delight.

Hardly more than the size of a small shed, it's not difficult to pass this little gem by without a second glance. Yet whether by chance or grand design, the rain has barely managed to even touch what is one of the most beautifully carved windows in Ireland.
